Englewood Community Farm Interfaith Picnic

06/11/2016 17:00 - 06/11/2016 21:00
1900 NE Englewood Rd, KCMO, MO, United States

Englewood Community Farm will host an interfaith picnic and fellowship event beginning at 5:00 p.m., with a focus on food sovereignty.

Hunger is a basic human need that unites us all, as does the human need for spiritual connection. Englewood’s primary ministry is feeding the hungry–spiritually, emotionally, and physically–through our food pantry and community farm. We know that people of many different faiths share our mission to feed the hungry, and people of many different faiths also experience hunger.

Many faiths also have holidays and rituals that coincide with the natural cycles of the earth and food production: tilling, planting, harvesting, etc. And food can become sacred when we “break bread” together. So our vision is to create a quarterly interfaith series of events at and around Englewood Community Farm, which will focus on how the cycles of nature and need unite us as people of faith.

Englewood is a small, welcoming congregation and we invite all who are interested to bring a song and a dish to share. We hope to share different foods that are related to different faith traditions–from casseroles to matzo–and, of course, we will have foods fresh from the farm!

One of our youth will give a musical offering, along with fellow members of her school string ensemble, and we invite anyone who wishes to bring a song or a chant that is spiritually meaningful as well.

In addition we will have “hunger games”. Participants who bring a dollar, canned/nonperishable food item for the pantry (or just a smile!) can compete in a three-legged race, among other games on the lawn. Game donations will be used to support the community farm and food pantry.

We hope you will join us to celebrate the beginning of summer on the farm and share ideas about how we can work together to serve those in need in our communities.
